Read more What kind of wood do you use? We use the finest quality clear western red cedar. Since Vancouver Island has the most beautiful cedar in the world, it would not make sense for us to use any other product. The fact that cedar is ideally suited to the out of doors means it really is the wood for us. We chose only the best quality, clear cedar and we treat it with the reverence it deserves. All our wood is FSC certified meaning that the logging practices this company adheres to are the highest in the world.We believe nothing suits our designs better than material that is sourced locally. Not only does it look beautiful but it seems to "fit" the natural environment. Our cedar is also the best wood around for stability and durability in the out of doors. Our Wood Philosophy top of page Does your work come finished? We are one of the few companies around that does offer a finished product for the out of doors. We do this because we believe that the cedar should be preserved where ever possible and that the right finish can really enhance the look of this beautiful wood. We only apply finishes that result in a clear look, allowing the grain of the cedar to shine through. Finishing products for the out of doors is very challenging. Not only does it add to the expense, but it is also very difficult to guarantee how long any particular finish will last. Wood is an organic product and when you place it in nature many factors are in place that will break down any finish applied. Sun, rain and the exposure to salty sea air are the main culprits. We have spent years researching this issue and it is an ongoing area of work for us. As new products come on the market we are always testing them out and we offer the best products that are available to us based on our current research. We look both at factors such as estimated longevity and ease of re-finishing to decide which product would work best. Any of our structures can also come unfinished and the price would be reduced to reflect this. top of page How do you build your structures? Dieuwertje brings her training as a furniture maker to all her structures, including our line of fabricated fence panels and gates. She uses joinery wherever it makes sense to do so resulting in a seamless look. When she does use fasteners she ensures that they do not detract from the look and she uses only the best quality, meant to withstand the elements. Sometimes, as in our line of fence panels, the appropriate use of fasteners actually becomes the look, adding both aesthetic appeal and functionality. top of page What kind of hardware do you use? We offer several options in hardware that we have tested over the years. What we look for is aesthetic appeal, functionality, durability and cost. Good hardware is an investment that makes sense as there is nothing more annoying than a gate latch that does not function well. Or a piece of hardware that detracts from the overall look. We also source out exterior lighting products should you desire to add lighting your passageway. top of page Do you offer installation? Victoria Wood Studio has actually worked with an Engineer to develop its own installation system which we offer with both our commissions and our fabricated product. A good installation is crucial to the longevity, functionality and aesthetic appeal of everything from a large passageway to a simple fence line.
