Secret Gardens a Place to Rejuvenate
A garden, even a small one can stimulate and heal. A beautiful example of this is found in the book and film A Secret Garden
by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Who can forget the image of the walled
garden with the secret gate which once discovered opens a world of
magic and healing to children and adults alike? Many gardeners seek to
recreate this feeling by creating walled off spaces using hedges
shrubbery and even garden gates.
Gates Going Nowhere
A gate doesn’t just have to be an entrance
from the street to the yard. A gate can also be used to divide a
garden or create a “secret” space to be discovered. In this
case its purpose is more symbolic than functional. Here whimsical
elements can create a feeling of magic and mystery. The gate
itself does not necessarily wall off the area. Rather it creates
an illusion of a gateway into a sacred land. Its sole purpose is
to create the feeling of stepping into another reality.
Gates as Passageways
Victoria Wood Studio also builds secret garden
gates. We call these gates passageways as their primary function
is to lead you into the "secret" or inner sanctum of your garden.
Their design is less architectural and more playful. Along with
the use of plants and shrubs these gates create a natural wall to give
even the smallest garden a feeling of seclusion and sanctuary.
They form a passageway to another world.
