Unique Structures for the Out of Doors

Victoria Wood Studio specializes in designing, building and installing one of a kind pieces for the out of doors. Designer/Builder Dieuwertje von Aesch works with the people and the place to create unique gates, passageways, arbours and pergolas. She uses only clear western red cedar, a product that is native to the west coast because it works so well in its natural setting.  Each piece comes with two coats of a hand rubbed finish called Naturhaus which both preserves and enhances the natural beauty of the wood.

In 2007 Ms. von Aesch was called Designer to Watch by Western Living magazine. and that same year one of her passageways was a Finalist for a Georgie Award. In 2008 another of her structures won a Silver Care Award.  These awards are sponsored by the Canadian Home Builders Association and celebrate excellence in design and build.  In March 2009, Victoria Wood Studio was featured in Douglas magazine as one of 10 Businesses to Watch. This competition showcased 10 businesses under three years old that have made a unique contribution to the local business community.

The Hand of the Maker

From the initial design meeting to the hand rubbed finish, the hand of the maker is evident.  Each piece poses unique challenges as she does not design around the build but rather she builds around the design.  She uses mortise and tenon joinery, especially on gate construction for strength, stability and beauty.  Each piece draws the eye with its unique dimensions and the play of light and shadow.  The beauty of the grain in the wood is utilized to full effect.

Creating Passageways

Her pieces invite you to stop, pause and reflect.  They often serve as invitations to enter a more private space, a courtyard, a garden or a home.  Ms von Aesch believes these transitions need to be marked by structures of beauty and substance. Yet they should look as though they had always been there, to complement their natural setting and desires and values of those who live within.
