How We Build Our Gates
First,
We
Pick
the
Wood
We love wood. We believe it is a precious
commodity that should be treated with respect. We buy our wood
from local mills, working with those who share our philosophy.
We handpick the wood for each project. Sometimes
we run across special pieces of a larger size or higher quality and we
keep it until we find the perfect use for it.
Next, We Mill the Wood
Wood that you buy from the lumberyard comes in
standard proportions. Since we mill our own wood we can create
dimensions that are not commonly seen. We make the wood conform to
our designs rather than the other way around. This is what draws your
eye to one of our gates.
Joinery as an Art Form
Much like a well made piece of furniture, a well
constructed gate is a thing of beauty. Mortise and
tenon joinery is the highest standard you can achieve in gate or door
construction. It takes more time, but pays off in gates that
function smoothly and last long. Gates made in this way have a
lasting presence that others do not.
A Touchable Finish
Nothing pleases us more than to see someone touching
one of our gates. We pay special attention to our finishing
techniques to ensure gates that weather well, look beautiful and are
smooth to the touch. We use a combination of planing and sanding
to create a smoother surface. The finish we use is an environmental German
import called
Naturhaus. It is an oil based finish so it is long lasting and easy to
maintain. Naturhaus allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine
through.
